Three Fifty
It seems that the new magic number now is 350. The whole community fighting against climate change is buzzing with this number.
So what is 350?
To make it simple, 350 parts per million (ppm) is the safe amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. Anything beyond that is excessive and harmful. Currently the world is at 387ppm and with the rate we’re going, it’s not going to take awhile before we finally plunge ourselves to death.
It’s scary, really. We’ve all seen the effects of too much CO2 in the atmosphere–with the wonky weather and natural disasters–and I don’t think I’d want to find out what next year will bring us. The good thing about this is, we can do something. Some people are already doing something. Of course, if everyone worked hand in hand to make this happen, we’ll achieve 350ppm the soonest.
Today is the International Day of Climate Action and the people over at 350.org have been busy getting people involved. If you’re interested in how to make your little contribution to this big event, visit their Action page.
If you’re still confused, this nifty animation below can provide enlightenment.
Let’s all be a part of the change.
