This week I found myself in an alleyway waiting for my Vietnamese food to be packed and ready. I had been craving pho for the longest of times and I finally succumbed to it. One of my favorite Vietnamese places is just a few blocks from my office building called Vietnamese Delights Pho 99. For $7.50 for a bowl of good pho, that’s already quite a bargain.

I know I’m supposed to be on my strict 14-day diet but I could never resist the lure of a chocolate lava cake complete with berries and vanilla ice cream. Let’s just say I owe myself 2 hours of cardio for consuming this.

This week has been memorable mainly because I finally had the guts to purchase myself an old SLR. I’ve never been much of a digital camera fan so I have always been on a lookout for a good old film camera. Paired with a bit of ol’ luck I managed to bag myself this Nikon EM which I have been taking around with me everywhere. I still have about eight frames left to shoot on the test roll and I can hardly wait to see how the photos turn out. For all I know I could be really bad at this and that purchasing this was a waste of time. Then again I could totally rock it. Haha. Let’s hope for the best!

Moe Moe finally got herself an iPhone! Welcome to the club, darling. And what better way to start her iPhone journey than by playing Words With Friends, right? But actually, I just wanted to show everyone that I don’t ALWAYS lose at this game. Although I know after this, she’s going to get a hang of it and beat me to a pulp.

———-

My weekend’s been about giving in to most of my desires: desserts, pho, and vintage cameras. As I type this I’m contemplating about ordering a box of pizza.

What have you given into this week?

Häagen-Dazs was kind enough to accommodate my request to have my scoop of vanilla sandwiched between two of their soft batch choco-chip cookies. I still like the ones I get from Manila though. Anyway, this was dessert before we went into the cinemas to catch Inception. Christopher Nolan is one of my favorite film directors and if you’ve seen his other work (Memento, Batman Begins, The Prestige, Dark Knight) you’d know he can tell you the most complicated of plot lines and not get confused.

What else can I say, nothing can make me happier quite like a box of chocolates and True Blood, or Eric Northman for that matter. Anyway, you should read the weekly review of True Blood that Mike Ryan writes for Vanity Fair. He’s a mad genius and a complete riot. Ryan also has a clever way of reviewing films by answering 25 questions one might possibly have of it. But I think it’s a more hilarious read after you’ve seen the movie instead of before you go see it.

Moe Moe and I went to Klapsons, a boutique hotel located in the CBD, to redeem the five-course meal I won at a media event. We got lost along the way but figured out where to go after a couple of detours. The food we had at Klapsons was good. I had pan seared foie gras, seafood soup, baked scallops, medium-well tenderloin, and chocolate souffle. I ordered some sweet wine to go with all of it. The best part, aside from the good company and conversation, was that we didn’t spend a dime. Our drinks were not part of the prize but the lovely people of Klapsons said that our wine was on the house. Muchas gracias!

I had a bad case of the cramps last Friday. I was all ready to leave but felt dizzy as I was about to cross the junction heading towards the MRT. I thought it best to just head back to my building while I still can instead of collapsing in a train full of strangers. Spent most of the day answering emails while lying down in bed.

For people who know me, I’m the least likely person to have a comb or brush. I know most would assume that I do because of my long hair but I’ve never brushed it for a long long long long time. I decided to give brushing another go when I saw this gorgeous paddle brush from Kent Brushes. This is supposed to help detangle and is perfect for thick, long hair. I’ve only had it for a day but let’s just say I’m kind of getting addicted to this whole brushing thing.

—–

Finally after months of them sitting in my drawer, I had my film rolls developed. Some were really old dating back to November of last year but most of it were from my birthday trip to Bali in March. Looking at them now, I never realized how lonely the whole trip must have been. The photos below give off that bittersweet vibe.

And so does this song:
[Audio clip: view full post to listen] Holiday by Small Sins

The last one is particularly sad especially with my shadow peeking out from the bottom like that. It’s strange, traveling alone. It’s liberating for most part but it was my birthday and I guess even just one or two of my close friends with me there would have made it less depressing on hindsight.

I’m not going to admit it too much but I sometimes feel lonely. That pang of emptiness comes in waves and mostly at night, right before I fall asleep. This does not mean I’m looking for someone (I’m not) or something (maybe) but there’s just that underlying current of sadness that never seems to go away. Do you sometimes get that too?

Last Monday I was invited to an event held at Food for Thought. I’ve always been a fan of them (I even had my 23rd birthday dinner there) and they recently opened a second branch along Queen Street, which I’ve never been to. Finally, I had a chance to go and was totally smitten by this light installation made from perhaps even more than a hundred bottles.

A colleague had bought a bag full of jelly beans and our team, who’s been working very hard on all of our accounts, couldn’t be more thankful. We munched on these when we needed that extra boost of sugar to get us through the afternoon.

On Friday, I was given this nifty pen. The mini car is detachable and to make it zoom out really fast all you had to do was pull it in reverse and let go. It brought me back to my younger days of playing with Matchbox cars. You can say this is going to be one of the favorite things on my office desk for weeks or until someone accidentally steps on it.

Saturday was such a wonderful day where I finally got to hangout with Nick whom I haven’t seen since my birthday party in March. I also finally got to see Stephie who’s been busy traveling and writing. We planned for dumplings during lunch and just retreated to Papa Palheta for coffee and cookies in the afternoon. Papa Palheta is such a delightful place that actually serves edible coffee. The long black coffee I had had perfect crema while the cappuccino’s foam that Nick had was beyond gorgeous. I ended Saturday catching Despicable Me in 3D with Nick, which capped the night perfectly.

—–

I’ve been enjoying my weeks like this; nothing too crazy or eventful. I’m really spending alone time and only coming out with friends who actually want to hangout with me.

How was your week so far?

Just thought that midweek’s the perfect time to share what I’ve done the previous week. Hopefully I can move this up to Sunday night or Monday. We’ll see. Here’s the first of, hopefully, many others.

Mum was in town the first weekend of July and she only stayed till Sunday night. I wasn’t really excited about it considering I was tired from traveling and that I’ve not had a proper weekend for weeks. But to be honest, I quite enjoyed her company. She was easygoing and didn’t mind if we took shelter in malls as the rain poured outside. I got teary-eyed when she left, I mean I haven’t seen her for two years and it just feels nice having your mother around.

Bumped my finger on the shelf of the refrigerator’s side door and didn’t realize my finger was bleeding till I left home for work. It kept bleeding for very much the entire day and I had to wear a bandage for most of the week. Kind of felt like I was sporting a new kind of accessory, only less fashionable.

It’s easier to hangout with Moe Moe now that she’s moved just down the road from where I’m working at. I always offer to come pick her up at her building when we do lunch or dinner and I’m always greeted by a throng of workers at busy intersections.

Ever since I got back from Hong Kong I’ve switched to noodles instead of rice. I’ve been having my daily bowl from this store and I don’t foresee myself getting sick of it just yet.
